Birte Schmid

Research assistant

Birte Schmid joined the Ratz lab as a research assistant in neural circuit development in 2023. Recently graduated with an MMedSc in biomedicine from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, with a focus on neuroscience, she conducted her master’s thesis in Professor Maria Ankarcrona's lab, exploring Flavonoids as mitochondrial enhancers in Alzheimer's disease.

In 2019, Birte obtained a BSc in biomedicine from the University of Würzburg, Germany, where she worked at the Rudolf Virchow Center in Professor Sonja Lorenz's lab. Here, she utilized structural biological methods to elucidate substrate recognition mechanisms within the ubiquitin system. Concurrently, she underwent preclinical training at the university's medical school.

Beyond the bench, Birte is not only passionate about science communication, and entrepreneurship but also about the Swedish „friluftsliv“, pop music, floral embroidery, and ice skating.
