Leonie von Berlin, PhD

Leonie von Berlin is a postdoctoral researcher, where her responsibilities include crafting computational pipelines in Python and R to analyze captivating data generated within the lab. Previously, she completed her Ph.D. in medical science under Michael's guidance in Jonas Frisén's lab, also situated at Karolinska Institute. There, she gained invaluable expertise in both wet lab techniques and the intricate design of scientific computational pipelines.

In 2018, Leonie earned her Master of Science in Biomedicine and Bioinformatics jointly from Karolinska Institute, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University. This interdisciplinary blend proved ideal for her, providing a comprehensive skill set to both generate and analyze her own data for thrilling projects. This proficiency was further demonstrated during her Master Thesis in Sten Linnarsson's lab, where she adeptly developed Python code to handle clonal barcodes in RNA sequencing data.

Leonie's academic journey commenced with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Bonn in 2015. Since general Biology wasn't her ultimate passion, she strategically directed her focus during her Bachelor thesis towards a biochemical project in neuroscience, delving into the intricacies of actin skeleton-modifying proteins associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Additionally, she actively participated in the iGEM competition in 2013, where she modified proteins in E. coli bacteria. Her profound interest in neuroscience further led her to pursue an internship at Harvard Medical School, making substantial contributions to the molecular characterization of pathways involved in Tuberous Sclerosis Complex disorder.

Beyond her expertise in bioinformatics and neuroscience, Leonie possesses a keen interest in science communication. She thrives on discovering inventive ways to convey scientific concepts to a broader audience and establish connections across diverse fields. This passion was further refined during her internship at the pharmaceutical company Bristol Myer Squibb.
